Google Business Profile (GBP)

Google Business Profile (GBP) is the free business listing from Google that appears in Search and Google Maps — the single biggest driver of local calls, directions, and booked jobs for home service businesses.

Quick Definition

A Google Business Profile is your business’s free Google listing — the box with your name, phone, hours, photos, and reviews that shows up when customers search “plumber near me” or tap a pin on Google Maps.

In plain English

Google Business Profile (GBP) replaced Google My Business (GMB) in 2021 — same tool, new name. It’s the listing you claim so that when someone searches your company or a service, Google shows the right info: phone number, hours, service area, photos, and star rating.

For an HVAC contractor or a plumber, GBP is often the first — sometimes the only — thing a customer sees before tapping “Call.” It’s the fast path from “my AC is broken” to a dispatched truck.

Why GBP matters for home service businesses

Your GBP is where the money comes from. Three reasons it’s the highest-leverage marketing asset you own:

  • Local pack visibility. The three map results at the top of Google are pulled from GBP. Rank in the local pack and you get the majority of clicks.
  • Direct calls, not just clicks. Customers tap the phone number straight from GBP. No landing page, no form — just a ringing phone.
  • Reviews surface here first. Your star rating and latest reviews live on GBP. Review count and recency directly affect ranking.

Key components of a Google Business Profile

Business info (NAP): Name, address, phone — must match your website and other listings exactly.
Categories: Primary + secondary (e.g., “HVAC contractor” + “Furnace repair service”). The single biggest ranking lever.
Hours & service area: Regular hours, holiday hours, and the ZIP codes or cities you serve.
Photos: Truck, team, before/after job shots. Listings with 10+ photos get more clicks and calls.
Posts, Q&A, services: Promotions, answered customer questions, and a list of every service you offer with prices.
Reviews: Star rating, review count, and your responses — all visible to every prospect.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • × Incomplete categories. Picking only one category when Google allows up to 10. Every missing secondary category is a missed search.
  • × Abandoned profiles. Hours from 2019, no photos since the truck was new, zero posts. Google ranks active profiles higher.
  • × Not responding to reviews. Unanswered reviews — good or bad — signal a disengaged business. See online reputation management.
  • × Duplicate profiles. Multiple listings for the same location split your reviews and tank your ranking. Claim and merge them.
